Robert Schumann was one of the first to pay tribute to the previously little-known composer Franz Schubert in his « Neue Zeitschrift fur Musik ». In a review on the occasion of a quartet evening in 1838, he wrote about the quartet « Death and the Maiden », which is presented here in the part edition with the original text of the New Schubert Edition: « Only the excellence of a work like Schubert’s in D minor … can offer some consolation about the early and most painful death of Beethoven’s first-born son; He accomplished and accomplished in a short time, better than anyone before him. »
